abstract = "Many efforts have been made in recent years to better understand
the elements driving climate changes. Along with greenhouse gases,
some recent studies have analyzed the impacts of land use change
on the temperature at local, regional and even global scale. Most
of these studies focused on the impact of changing vegetation
cover by cropland and other vegetated surfaces. This paper aims to
complement the analysis of land use impacts by assessing the
effects of bare soil on the surface and air temperature. LANDSAT 8
and MODIS imagery were used to access the surface temperature
through different approaches, which were validated with near
surface air temperature from ground stations. Vegetation index was
also produced from LANDSAT 4-5 bands to indicate land use changes.
Regarding the approaches to obtain surface temperature, the
NDVI-based surface temperature seem so produce reasonable values.
The method based on the land cover classification is strongly
dependent on the classification quality and on the emissivity
values. On the temperature and land use perspective, the results
show a significant dependence of air temperature on the land use,
with a negative correlation between NVDI and air temperature.
Finally, the energy balance based on the temperature (Ts and LST)
indicate warming conditions for regions with seasonal changes in
                         land use.",
